If you have soft water, forget this chemical. It won't do you any good. If you have calcium levels of more than 200 it may not seem that you need anything else in the water, but you don't want that calcium to fall out of solution and begin to build up on your walls and equipment. After a time, the walls and floor of the pool would begin to feel rough and uncomfortable and your equipment may stop working because they get too gummed up with scale. Scale Inhibitor keeps the calcium particles tied in solution, so they can't fall out onto your walls, floor and equipment. The Scale Inhibitor becomes an easier, less expensive maintenance product.
